Madeleine Lovell is Guest Conductor of London Lyric Opera, Musical Director of St George’s Chamber Orchestra (www.sgco.co.uk), Musical Director of Londinium (www.londinium-voices.org.uk), and Associate Chorus Master of the Philharmonia Chorus (www.philharmoniachorus.co.uk). She is also Director of Music at Queens’ College, Cambridge. Madeleine has conducted a wide range of orchestras and choirs across the UK, including the National Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Choir, and regularly works with the BBC Symphony Chorus.

Having studied music at King's College, Cambridge, Madeleine received an M.Phil in Musicology from Cambridge in 2000, and spent a further two years researching comic opera. She has a Masters in Singing and Certificate of Advanced Studies in Repetiteur Training, both from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Madeleine has participated in several masterclasses and courses, including the 2005 Dartington International Summer School Advanced Conducting Course (where her studies were funded by a D'Oyly Carte Bursary), performing excerpts from Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress.

Madeleine has extensive experience in the field of opera, having been Deputy Music Director for Pavilion Opera (performing Les contes d’Hoffmann and Il Trovatore), and Musical Director of Alternative Opera (performing Die Fledermaus). The latter production was reviewed by Antony Craig for Gramophone, who wrote: ‘Madeleine Lovell ... marshalled all her forces with skill and finesse.’ More recently she was Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor for London Lyric Opera’s performance of Der fliegende Holländer at the Barbican, and Conductor for the same company’s Fidelio with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Cadogan Hall. Of the latter performance Hilary Finch wrote in The Times: ‘...galvanized by the superb conducting of young Madeleine Lovell: her instinctive and assured grasp of tempo and pacing energised every singer, the playing of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the singing of the Philharmonia Chorus and Queens' College Chapel Choir.’

Work with orchestras has taken Madeleine around the UK, including tours and recordings, but her principle focus is currently St George’s Chamber Orchestra, with whom she has performed at LSO St Luke’s and Cadogan Hall, as well as its regular venue of St George’s Church, Beckenham. Of one recent performance Yehuda Shapiro wrote for Opera Now: ‘the conducting of Madeleine Lovell, like the playing of St George’s Chamber Orchestra, was consistently sensitive and well-judged’ The SGCO attracts the finest professional players and the highest calibre of soloists, most recently Thomas Carroll who performed Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations.

As a Chorus Master Madeleine has worked extensively with the Philharmonia Chorus and BBC Symphony Chorus. With the former, she has prepared performances at the Royal Albert Hall, Westminster Cathedral and throughout the UK, as well as two premiere recordings in London and Valencia. With the BBC Symphony Chorus Madeleine has regularly appeared at the BBC Proms, preparing, for instance, their performance of Verdi’s Requiem in August 2008. She has also been involved in many other BBCSC projects, including BBC Two’s Maestro. Madeleine gives five concerts a year with Londinium vocal ensemble, a group fast establishing a reputation as one of London’s premiere choirs, whose main focus is early and contemporary repertoire. She is in demand for choral workshops, and will be giving several in the UK and Holland this summer, as well as directing an evensong for the Eton Choral Course.
