Karl Huml

resides in Vienna where he is contracted to the Wiener Volksoper. For this company, he has performed Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro, Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni and Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Until recently, he was resident at the Bremen Theater where he sang Ramfis in Aida, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Colline in La Bohème, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Colatinus in The Rape of Lucretia, Ferrando in Il trovatore, Frère Laurent in Roméo et Juliette, Timur in Turandot, Snug/Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hermit in Der Freischütz, Tod in Kaiser von Atlantis (a role he repeated in Biel, Switzerland) and the title role in Don Quichotte. As the winner of the 2000 German Operatic Award, Karl Huml became a member of the Cologne Opera Young Artists’ Program.  He subsequently became a contracted artist to Cologne Opera where, during 2001/2002, he performed the roles of Moor in Faust (Louis Spohr), Second Armed Man in Die Zauberflöte, Lt Ratcliffe in Billy Budd, Herald, Farfarello and Creonte in The Love for Three Oranges, Schlemil in The Tales of Hoffmann, Count Laertes in The Players (Juraj Benes), Cadmus/Priest in Semele and Der Henker in Das Nush-nushi (Hindemith). From 1997 to 1999, Karl Huml was engaged by Opera Australia where his roles included Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata, Mr Flint in Billy Budd, the Duke of Verona in Romeo et Juliette, The Magician in Rinaldo, Il Frate in Don Carlo, Don Basilio in The Barber of Seville. He also performed the role of Zuniga in Carmen for the West Australian Opera. Karl Huml is the recipient of the Herald Sun Aria award (1995), the Dame Mabel Brookes Memorial Fellowship and the Metropolitan Opera Auditions award (1999) and was nominated for the 1998 Remy Martin Opera Australia Award.  In 2000, he competed in the Metropolitan National Grand Finals in New York. Equally at home on the concert platform, Karl Huml’s credits include Mozart’s Requiem with the Sydney Symphony (2003), Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor with the Melbourne Chorale, Haydn’s Mass in Time of War and Bruckner’s Te Deum for the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Society and Mozart’s Coronation Mass with the National Boys’ Choir. In 2005, he guested with Opera Australia as Sarastro and appeared in concert with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Other recent engagements include 5th Jew in Salome in both Hamburg and Brisbane, Il Frate in Essen, Inigo Gomez in L'heure Espagnole and Zuniga in Carmen in Vienna, Sparafucile in Perth and a return to Bremen as Don Quichotte. In November, 2008, Karl Huml sang Daland in Die fliegende Höllander at London’s Barbican.
